Repotting your Plants for Spring

Spring is here! Which means now is the perfect time to check in with your plants. When was the last time you repotted your plants? If you don’t know the answer, that’s okay! We’re here to help! We’ve put together this helpful little guide to assist you in repotting your plants this spring.

So when should you repot your plants?

It is suggested to repot your plants every 12-18 months, but every plant grows differently. Below are some signs to look for that might mean it’s time to repot.

  • The roots are growing through your pot

  • Your plant is growing slower than usual

  • Your plant is being pushed up and out of the pot by the roots

  • Your plant is top heavy and starting to constantly fall

  • Your plant is not retaining water

  • The soil is compacted

  • Mold or bacteria is growing in the soil

  • Pests are infesting your plant and the soil

Step 1. Picking the Perfect Pot

Start by sizing up your pots a few inches at a time. It’s common to size up by 2’s, so if you’re currently using a 4” pot size up to a 6” pot for more room to grow. When it comes to deciding what type of pot/planter you’d like to use, it is often recommended to go with a pot that has drainage holes in the bottom. Terracotta pots are also great options due to their rich iron and clay make up. This allows for breathability for your plants.

If you are using a pot or planter without drainage holes, make sure to add a layer of rocks to create a place for excess water to collect. This will keep your plants from retaining too much water, resulting in growth of bacteria and pests.

Step 2: Choose your soil and fill the bottom of your pot

There are many different types of soil to choose from, so make sure you do your research on what type of soil is best for the plant you are repotting. Once you’ve selected your soil, fill your pot up about 1/3 of the way with soil.

Step 3: Remove your plant from its original pot

Gently remove your plant from its current pot. Carefully check the roots and try to loosely untangle the roots without causing damage to your plant. Try to get a decent amount of the old soil off the roots if possible. If you are dealing with pests in your plants this is a good time to gently rinse your roots and get all remaining soil off to eliminate the issue.

Step 4: Repot your plant

Place the roots in the center of the pot on top of your fresh soil. Next, gently add soil around the plant to fill. Make sure to leave about a half an inch of room at the top of your new pot so it doesn’t overflow when you water your plant. Gently press down with your fingers to pack the soil in your pot. This gives your plant compact soil to grow in.

Step 5: Give it a little water

Finish by lightly watering your plant. Then give your plant some time to breathe and water again in about a week. And there you have it, you’ve repotted your plant. Get ready for growth!
